Description: Verbal, physical and sexual abuse occurs in various situations and at various ages. The abuse may have been encountered during childhood, adolescence, or adulthood in variety of contexts, such as home, school or work.   This workshop will focus on a model of counseling survivors of verbal, physical or sexual abuse based on Adlerian psychology.

Professionals who attend will find refreshing and new approaches to working with survivors of abuse. Adler focused on the wholistic approach to intervention, treatment and prevention. This workshop will be based on Adlerian theory and intended to provide tools and stimulate thinking in creative and useful directions. Presentation will be by lecture, demonstration and small group participation.

 

Learning Objectives:  Emphasis of the workshop will be on an Adlerian approach to working with victims of verbal, physical and sexual abuse.  Participants will be able to: a) identify victims of abuse; understanding the individual responses to the abuse, b) determine the decisions survivors made about themselves, others and the world as a result of the abuse, c) ascertain the assets, strengths, and resources of the survivors of abuse, d) design personalized strategies for treatment and e) explore a multidisciplinary approach to the prevention of abuse.

About Dr. Wingett:  Wes Wingett, PhD, LMHP, has been a counselor and educator in private practice in Norfolk, Nebraska since l978.  Prior to entering private practice, Dr. Wingett had been employed as a counselor in a mental health center, and as a teacher, counselor and administrator at various levels of education from elementary through graduate school. Dr. Wingett has served as a consultant to organizations and agencies in the areas of early childhood education, time and stress management, domestic violence, drug and alcohol prevention and treatment, health care and wellness, adult-child relationships, and training of professional counselors.  He has provided time and stress management, supervisor training and personnel consultation to various business and industries. He has conducted Adlerian-based training and seminars in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania and Hungary. Currently he serves as an adjunct faculty member at Wayne State College, Wayne, Nebraska and Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania.  Dr. Wingett is a Diplomate in Adlerian Psychology conferred through the North American Society of Adlerian Psychology.
